THE NATURAL LAKE - AN EXCEPTIONAL "NATURA 2000" SITE
The lake of Canet en Roussillon is a rare and complete ecosystem. It received the quality label "Natura 2000" from the European ecological network which aims at preserving natural habitats, species habitats as well as protecting living areas for the birds living in the wild.
With over 246 registered species and over 300 migrating birds, the lake has become a unique observation spot in any season :
- From mid-February to mid-August, during the nesting period, you can see nesting species such as the Purple heron, the Black-winged Stilt, the Western marsh-harrier or a Moustached warbler!
- From February to May and from August to October, you can see migrating birds such as the Pink Flamingo, the Squacco Heron or the Wood Sandpiper!
- All year round, hibernating species can be found around the lake such as the Great White Egret, the Pied Avocet and the Kingfisher!
THE FISHERMEN'S HUTS - A LIVING VILLAGE
Restored in 1993 with traditional material (sea reeds, canes from Provence) carefully selected to be ahrd wearing and water resistant, the fishermen's huts are protected from the rain, sheltered form the wind but also airy in the Summer. They are no longer lived in but are used to stock fishing nets and other fishing material.
Fishing for pleasure is forbidden whereas professional fishing takes place from October to the end of March. The main species are eels, grey prawns, sea bass, crabs and mule fish.
- From June 1st to September 30th, exhibitions, guided visits by the staff from Conservatoire du Littoral (Organisation for the protection of the coast line), binoculars for hire, t-shirts and postcards for sale etc.
- Guided visits are organised all year round for school parties or for those involved in educational projects.
